From Desperation to Determination

Umair’s battle for education and stability

In the heart of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district lies the quaint village of Adijan, a place where the life is dependent on agriculture.

Nestled 16.5 km from the bustling town of Kulgam, Adijan is home to around 1700 residents who find sustenance and livelihood from the Kandi Nallah that cuts through the landscape.

Amidst the pastoral beauty and communal harmony of this village, unfolds a story of struggle and resilience of a determined 15-year-old boy, Umair (Name Changed).

Adijan is a village where the people’s lives are intertwined with the land.

Fields of vegetables and sprawling apple orchards dominate the scenery, while the community thrives on the seasonal harvests and the bounty of the Kandi Nallah.

The river is more than just a water source; it is a lifeline, providing sand and stones that the villagers extract for additional income.

Umair, like many of his peers, splits his time between school and helping his family in the fields.

Umair is a ninth-grade student at Kaka Shah School Mirhama, but his journey to education has been anything but straightforward.

Living under the roof of his maternal aunt, Umair’s family was abandoned by his father, a man plagued by health issues and addiction.

In a desperate attempt to afford medical treatment, his father sold their land, leaving the family destitute and homeless.

The loss of their land was a devastating blow, leading to financial instability and domestic violence, which eventually culminated in abandonment.

Umair, his mother, and his elder sister found refuge with his maternal aunt, but their struggles were far from over. Umair’s sister, who had dreams of higher education, had to sacrifice her ambitions to support the family, while his mother shouldered the burden of caregiving and household responsibilities.

Despite the hardships, Umair remained determined to pursue his education.

However, the need to support his family often forced him to miss school, as he engaged in labourious work to contribute to the household income.

The psychological toll of witnessing domestic violence and experiencing abandonment weighed heavily on him, yet he never lost sight of his goal.

Umair’s plight did not go unnoticed.

A vigilant member of the local Child Protection Group (CPG) recognised his situation and brought it to the attention of Humanity the Ultimate Faith (HUF), an organisation dedicated to providing support to vulnerable children.

The HUF team, using a case management approach, conducted a thorough assessment and initiated an intervention to help Umair balance his educational aspirations with his familial responsibilities.

Through the intervention, Umair gained access to educational opportunities, including scholarships and sponsorship programmes.

These programmes were tailored to accommodate his dual role as a student and a contributor to the household income. Moreover, psychological support became a cornerstone of the intervention, helping Umair and his family cope with past traumas and develop strategies to navigate their ongoing challenges.

The HUF team facilitated the necessary documentation for a sponsorship application under Mission Vatsalya, ensuring that Umair’s case received the required verification from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

This comprehensive support system has provided Umair with a lifeline, offering him the chance to continue his education while contributing to his family’s well-being.

Umair’s case sheds light on the complex interplay of poverty, family instability, and educational barriers that many children face.

With continued support, Umair holds the promise of a brighter future for himself and his family.

In Adijan, amidst the challenges, hope and resilience continue to thrive.

Through community effort and compassionate intervention, children like Umair can envision a future filled with possibility and promise.

Umair’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that targeted support and community solidarity can have on the lives of those in need.

As Umair continues his journey, the collective efforts of those who stepped in to assist him offer hope, not just for him, but for the many others like him who strive for a better tomorrow amidst today’s struggles.

Umair’s battle for education and stability is far from over, but with determination and support, he is on the path to a brighter future.
