Hadiya

Background

In the silent village of Bandzoo, Pulwama, 42 kilometers from Srinagar, nine-year-old Hadiya (Name Changed) lives with her mother and elder brother, Huzaif, thirteen. Their life was shaken in 2020 when they lost their father due to an untimely death. The loss brought immense emotional and financial stress to the family, leaving Haiya’s mother to solely support her children.

Challenges Faced

With no adequate support system, the void left by their father’s absence began manifesting in both children. Hadiya withdrew into isolation, while Huzaif exhibited impulsive and demanding behavior. The emotional turmoil was so intense that their mother, overwhelmed and distressed, began considering institutional care for Huzaif, fearing she could no longer manage alone.

Community Intervention

Knowing that this was a situation that needed a lot of attention, CPG Bandzoo and HWVO came into the scene in a compassionate but structured manner. The team utilized Case Management as the methodology: counseling, documentation, linkage to welfare schemes, and sponsorship support.

Holistic Case Management Approach

  1. Psychosocial Support

Psychosocial assessments and counseling for both children regarding emotional trauma and behavioral issues.

Hadiya started feeling less lonely as time progressed, and Huzaif’s acts became more stable during the meetings.

  1. Economic Stability Efforts

CPG facilitated the family with all required papers and presented their matter to the concerned authorities.

During 2023, Mission Vatsalya sanctioned sponsorship in the form of INR 48,000 for Hadiya for the year 2023-24 which directly relieved some part of the financial burden.

  1. Academic Support

The local school authorities jointly collaborated with CPG. Entire school fee on both children had been completely waved.

  1. Sustainable Livelihood

CPG brought mother of Hadiya under ISSS in the year 2023. So far, widow’s pension has received with a sum amount of Rs 1000 that is monthly payment.

More resultantly she becomes an AAYA/helper by the school at government level whose income flows uniformly to her wallet.

Impact and Transformation

Comprehensive interventions ensured the prevention of family separation by addressing multidimensional vulnerabilities. Emotional healing through psychosocial support has helped both children cope with their grief and behavioral challenges. Financial sponsorship and successful linkages with government schemes have eased the economic strain, empowering Hadiya’s mother to sustain her household independently.

This case brings into focus the transformative power of community action. Not only did the proactive efforts of CPG Bandzoo and HWVO protect vulnerable children but also called out the importance of civil society collaboration with government welfare programs in sustainable change for families like Hadiya’s.
